Older Adults and Caregivers

Growing older can bring new issues and challenges, such as the devastating loss of a partner or close friend, a feeling of financial insecurity and physical changes. We offer counselling to older adults who are experiencing these life transitions to help them gain clarity, insight and new strategies to deal with their situation.

Caregiving is a mentally and physically demanding task that takes its toll, not only physically, but also mentally and spiritually. Understanding the need for counselling, when necessary, helps caregivers to maintain quality of care and positive outlooks when charged with another’s care. For individuals who provide care for older adults, an occasional or “check in” counselling session offers a safe place to rest and recover, to talk about their own needs and to strategize ways to take care of themselves while providing care to someone they love.

Counsellors can assist with a variety of concerns that affect older adults such as:

  • – Anxiety
  • – Carer stress
  • – Depression
  • – End of life issues
  • – Family conflict
  • – Financial stress
  • – Grief and loss
  • – Living in aged care facilities
  • – Loneliness
  • – Medical problems
  • – Memory loss
  • – Retirement
